DSi XL - white light flashes on bottom screen and DS turns off

My son's DSi XL...the issue is one day all of a sudden he turned it on and the blue indicator light came on, the bottom screen flashed white, and the DS turned off. We have tried everything! Plugged it in to charge and orange light turns on, holding the power button in for a whole minute, taken the battery out and put it back in after an hour, tried turning it on while charging...always the same result. It has no damage, nothing spilled on it, wasn't dropped (and it has a thick Nerf cover on anyway). I have read through the entire forum on here and searched this problem online, found several different answers: needs new battery, needs new top screen, damaged or out of place ribbon cable, even a step by step guide on how to open and remove the motherboard and take it all apart (which I am not willing to spend many confusing hours doing). Like almost every answer on here, I'm sure someone is just going to tell me to call the Nintendo number. But the warranty is expired and I know the cost to repair is $75 or more. I figure why pay that much when a brand new one is $130? (I cannot afford the $200 for a 3DS XL) SOOOO......what I am trying to find out is if anyone knows the real reason for the DS doing this? And is there any solution that doesn't require sending it in for repair and paying more than half the price of a brand new one? (I'm not a cheapskate, I swear, just a single mother of two who works hard to make ends meet!) Please if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Thanks so much!
